Karate students are awarded different coloured belts as they progress, indicating the grade that they have achieved. Students who have not yet been awarded a black belt have kyu grades, and these start at 10th kyu with a red belt, working up to 1st kyu, which is indicated by a brown and red belt. Black belt grades are called dan grades, and start with 1st dan. Grades from 1st dan to 3rd dan have defined requirements - beyond that the grades are awarded for exceptional achievement, at the discretion of a committee of the highest ranked instructors in the association. In order to be awarded each belt there is a syllabus of set requirements. The Cambridge club and Lea Valley club have put the SKA's syllabus online, and these can be accessed using the links below.
