Criteria for Shodan Grading


These are the criteria for Shodan and SKA Assistant Instructor

Minimum requirements

  • Instructor's permission
  • Minimum age 16 years old on day of grading
  • 1st Kyu or pre Shodan – 1 year (full). Total training 4 years on day of grading
  • Training twice a week minimum
  • Regular attendance at SKA open day and Kata/kumite courses
  • Strong commitment to your training, karate and SKA
  • Standard required - competent 1st Kyu ready to progress to the next level

Pre assessment – Assessments will be carried out in the preceding months before the grading

  • Kihon Demonstration and explanation of five punches, five kicks, five strikes, five blocks and three stances
  • Kata Heian Shodan to Heian Godan
  • Kata Tekki Shodan, Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Empi
  • Kata Jion, Jitte, Ji'in, Gankaku, Hangetsu and Tekki Nidan
  • Kumite Ippon kumite (four of each level, left and right) as per grading syllabus book
  • Kumite Jiyu’ippon kumite (four of each level, left and right) as per grading syllabus book

Written exam

  • Approx. 1 hour 20 mins (history and terminology)

Grading on the day

  • As per SKA syllabus book
  • 2016 - Dan Grading takes place on 12th November
